On October 31, the special sharing and charity event titled "Live Up to the Opportunities Given to Women in This Era," hosted by "Ricun Xingtuan" and the "Insights" column of Zhongshuge, and co-organized by Women in Localization (W.L.), concluded at Zhongshuge. Ms. Su Yang, President of the Shanghai Chapter of W.L. and General Manager of Tangneng Translation, participated in the event and delivered a wonderful speech.
As a sharing session focused on women's issues, the event also drew attention to the social problem of "period poverty." Therefore, the remaining funds from the event were used to purchase sanitary napkins, which were donated to junior and senior high school students in poverty-stricken areas. The recipients were 960 female students from two high schools: Huize County Wenyuan High School and Huize County Dacheng High School.
Six guest speakers shared their experiences and insights on women's mental health, career development, and other topics from different perspectives. "Faith is a bird that feels the light and sings at dawn when the sky is still dark." With 8 years of teaching experience in universities and 18 years of management experience in language service companies, Ms. Su, who founded and led Tangneng Translation to become one of the top 27 companies in the Asia-Pacific region globally, shared her understanding of career, family, and self as a woman.
As a woman in the translation and localization industry, a hardworking boss often asked "Do you have translation projects?", a mother who struggles to balance everything, and a post-70s "front wave" who loves to strive and values independence, Ms. Su introduced her authentic self through these labels, while also interpreting her understanding of female identity. Recalling past life episodes in her speech, she posed a heartfelt question: Since it was so difficult, why did she choose to leave the comfort zone of being a university teacher at a prestigious school to start a business? She answered that for a firm goal, one must put in many hard efforts and even make sacrifices at times, but this is not a form of suffering—especially when doing so with faith and an irresistible passion. One should give themselves a chance to take a leap of faith, as the sense of mission, achievement, and value brought by the process are incomparable. This is how Tangneng Translation became what it is today.
In the subsequent debate session, the topic was "Should women shine 高调 (high-profile) or achieve goals in a gentle and subtle manner?" The guests expressed their diverse perspectives. Using analogies to "empowerers," Ms. Su advocated for "high-profile" approaches through arguments such as: acting boldly while staying humble, shining brightly without being aggressive, not only perfecting oneself but also benefiting others and contributing to society, etc.
As a small wave in the translation and localization industry, Editor Tang has always believed that in this era, women are not the ones to be defined—they can bloom gracefully at every stage of life. As Ms. Su of Tangneng Translation said, let us be ourselves, become better versions of ourselves, and make the world a better place because of us!
